Ezra Levant vs "The Commish"

6 videos.

H/T to FARK and Little Green Footballs, but this stuff can't be spread enough.

I have no idea of Mr Levant's opinions on most things; I've never really paid him much attention. He might be a total asshole for all I know. But he's *exactly* right in his attitude towards the Human Rights Commission.

Freedom of Speech that doesn't protect unpopular speech--all unpopular speech--isn't worth a pinch of coonshit.

Thanks for standing up, Ezra. I'm really ashamed of my country and my province that you had to be there. Ya did good, though.

Ezra is a Conservative loon, who bayed at 'teh lieberals' in The Western Standard, all the while taking government handouts to keep the magazine afloat....

And while I disagree with HRC and such as much as you, this is really a manufactured crisis cum ego trip for Ezra - he could have simply sent a registered letter to respond, he was in no way compelled to show up in person before the commissioner. That he showed up (of his own accord)after whining about on his blog for two days, video tapped it and put the video on Youtube within hours, shows this is more about Ezra Levant being an attention whore than about "free speech".

I made this point, though, on a few of the progressive blogs that I consider my friends:

In 1644, in his great treatise on freedom of the press, freedom of speech and freedom of expression Areopagitca, John Milton warned that persecuting speech would result in giving speaker some leguitimacy he or she did not deserve. He stated that such things would show that the government "feared" what the speaker had to say was true even if it wasn't and that trials would give the speaker a state sanctioned platform to further spout and spread their nonsense.

That is exactly what Levant is doing - using the AHRC to spread his anti-Muslim bigotry and make himself out to be the poor persecuted victim, as evidenced by his Youtube video. Rather than silence his hateful speech, the HRC has given him a platform and made him into a folk hero.

And just so you know the depths of Levant's publicity whoring, he is the guy that tried to run in Calgary Southwest 10 years ago and refused to give up his nomination to Stephen Harper, even when his riding association agreed.

I'll agree that the HRC is ridiculous, but Levant is no hero.
